Connections

The ATEM Television Studio 4K8 offers a wide range of connectivity options. It includes 8 SDI video inputs with frame synchronization and format converters on all inputs, and 12 SDI video outputs supporting SDI rates of 1.5G, 3G, 6G, and 12G. Additionally, it provides 1 HDMI video output, 10 SDI Aux outputs, and 1 dedicated SDI program output. For multiview monitoring, it features both 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 outputs. The switcher also includes 2 USB-C webcam outputs, supporting 720p or 1080p streaming at the program frame rate.

Audio Connections

The system is equipped with 2 balanced XLR analog inputs, 1 BNC MADI input with 32 channels, 2 RCA stereo inputs, and 1 5-pin XLR talkback connection. On the output side, it provides 4 analog 1/4" jack outputs, 1 BNC MADI output with up to 64 channels, and 1 5-pin XLR talkback output. Embedded audio is supported with 4 channels on all SDI inputs and 16 assignable channels on SDI outputs.

Synchronization and Timing

For synchronization, the ATEM 4K8 includes 1 BNC timecode input and output, as well as 1 BNC reference input and output, supporting tri-sync or black burst. It features an internal timecode generator and supports video input re-sync on all 8 inputs.

Control and Communication

The switcher supports RS-422 remote control via RJ12, Ethernet control via 4 RJ45 ports with 10/100/1000/10G BASE-T capability, and USB-C connections for external recording, webcam out, software updates, and switcher control. Talkback integration is enabled via RJ45 for third-party systems, and tally output can be added using the Blackmagic GPI and Tally Interface (sold separately).

Video Standards and Processing

ATEM Television Studio 4K8 supports a wide range of video formats including HD standards (720p50/59.94/60, 1080i50/59.94/60, and 1080p up to 60fps) and Ultra HD standards up to 2160p60. It complies with SMPTE broadcast standards, supports 4:2:2 10-bit video sampling, and uses Rec.709 color space. SDI auto switching is supported across 1.5G, 3G (A/B), 6G, and 12G formats.

Switcher Features

This model features 1 M/E row, 10 direct crosspoints with 20 shifted crosspoints, and illuminated tri-color LED buttons with customizable LCD labels. It includes 4 upstream keyers, 2 downstream keyers, 4 advanced chroma keyers, 2 DVEs, and 1 SuperSource for advanced layering. Transitions are supported through stinger and DVE effects, with adjustable rates. The panel also includes 10 dedicated macro buttons, 12 AUX buttons, a fader bar, 3-axis joystick, and a numeric keypad.

Streaming and Recording

The switcher supports direct live streaming via RTMP using Ethernet or shared USB-C internet connections. For recording, it enables direct capture to internal M.2 flash storage (optional) or external drives via USB-C. Recordings are stored as H.264 MP4 files in HD or H.265 HEVC files in Ultra HD, both with AAC audio. Supported media formats include ExFAT, APFS, and HFS+.

Multi View Monitoring

ATEM 4K8 provides a configurable multiview output supporting 16, 13, 10, 7, or 4 windows, with labels and audio meters. Both SDI and HDMI outputs support HD and Ultra HD multiview formats, with a minimum resolution of 1366 x 768.

Media Players and Pool

The switcher includes 2 built-in media players with fill and key channels. The media pool supports 20 still images in common formats (PNG, TGA, BMP, GIF, JPEG, TIFF) and 2 motion clips up to 2160p60. Clip capacity allows 720 frames in HD720, 360 frames in HD1080, and 90 frames in UHD 2160.

Audio Mixer

It features a professional 58-channel Fairlight audio mixer with parametric EQ, dynamics processing (compressor, limiter, expander, and gate), and audio-follow-video support. Level and peak metering are provided for precise audio control.

Camera Control

When paired with compatible Blackmagic Design cameras, the ATEM 4K8 enables remote camera control, including focus, iris, zoom, gain, white balance, tint, shutter, ND filter, tally, color correction, and record start/stop.

Software and Compatibility

The switcher comes with the ATEM Software Control Panel for macOS and Windows, supporting Mac OS Sonoma/Sequoia and Windows 10/11. Firmware updates are performed via USB or Ethernet.

Power and Installation

Power requirements include an internal 100–240V AC supply and a 12V DC 4-pin XLR input for external or battery power. The unit consumes 120W and can be installed on a desktop or in-desk mount.

Environmental Specifications

The system operates between 0° to 40°C, can be stored between -20° to 60°C, and functions at 0% to 90% non-condensing humidity.
